Hydro Jet Sewer Line Cleaning in Mount Laurel: When It Is the Right Tool
Hydro jetting clears a home sewer line with high pressure water instead of a spinning blade. It is a strong tool, but it is not the answer to every slow drain.
The short answer on jetting a sewer line
Hydro jet sewer line cleaning pushes a hose with a forward and backward facing nozzle through your main drain. Water leaves the nozzle at very high pressure, scours the pipe wall, and flushes grease, silt and soft debris out toward the street connection. It is the better choice when the line is slowing down from buildup, because a cable only punches a hole through the middle of the clog.
It is the wrong choice when the pipe itself is broken, collapsed or badly offset. Pressure water in a cracked line can wash soil in through the gap. That is why a careful plumber looks first and jets second.

Jet, cable or camera first
Use this to see which tool fits what your drains are doing. A plumber will confirm it on site.
| What you notice | Likely first tool | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One sink drains slowly, others fine. | Hand snake at that fixture. | The clog is local, not in the main. |
| Every drain gurgles and slows together. | Camera, then jet or cable. | Points to the main line, so look before cutting or blasting. |
| Same backup returns every few months. | Hydro jetting. | Buildup on the pipe wall needs scouring, not a hole poked through it. |
| Tree roots seen on a past camera run. | Cable with a cutter head first. | Roots need to be cut, then the line can be jetted clean. |
| Sewage rising in the lowest drain. | Stop water use and call. | Could be your line or the municipal main. |
Jetting is not a repair. If the camera finds a crack or a belly in the pipe, the line needs sewer line repair, and cleaning only buys time.
Stop and call before you try to fix a main line backup
If sewage is coming up in a shower, tub or floor drain, stop running water in the house. Do not pour drain chemicals into a backed up line, because the next person to open a cleanout may get splashed. Do not rent a jetter yourself, since the hose can whip back out of a cleanout if it is fed wrong.
Call the 24/7 line at (609) 547-1417 and say which fixtures are affected. Our team handles sewer line cleaning at night, on weekends and on holidays.

Call (609) 547-1417How a jetting visit usually goes
The order matters more than the machine.
- Find the cleanout. The plumber locates the cleanout fitting, usually near the foundation, in the basement or in a crawlspace, and opens it slowly in case the line is full.
- Run a camera. A sewer inspection shows grease, roots, scale or a break, so the plan is built on what is really in the pipe.
- Choose the nozzle. Grease and silt call for a different nozzle than roots or hard scale, and the plumber matches pressure to the pipe material.
- Jet in passes. The hose goes in, then is pulled back while the rear jets scour the wall. Several passes clear the line without rushing.
- Camera again. A second look confirms the pipe is clear and shows whether any damage was hiding under the clog.
Mount Laurel sewer mains and your own cleanout
Local sewer note
The Mount Laurel Municipal Utilities Authority runs the township sewer. In January 2016 a sewer main break caused a spill in the Ramblewood section, and in May 2016 a force main leak on Hartford Road between Route 38 and Union Mill Road closed the road while tanker trucks hauled wastewater. The authority asked residents with backups to call it.
The practical lesson is simple. If a backup hits at the same time as a main break, no amount of jetting on your side will help, so find your cleanout now and learn where the lowest drain sits. When a backup shows up in a house with a clear private line, report it to the authority and then call a plumber to confirm the problem is not yours.
What you can do before the plumber arrives
- Stop using sinks, showers, dishwasher and washing machine until the line is cleared.
- Locate the cleanout cap and clear a path to it, without opening it.
- Note which fixtures are slow and which are fine, since that points to the clog location.
- Keep children and pets away from any floor drain with standing water.
- Turn off power to any basement outlet near standing water at the breaker, but only if the panel is dry and you can reach it safely.
If water is touching an outlet or appliance and you cannot reach the panel safely, stay out and call 911.
Why grease and aging pipe make jetting popular here
Most of the township's housing was built after the mid 1960s, so many sewer laterals are cast iron, clay or older plastic pipe from different decades. Cast iron develops rough scale inside, and that rough surface grabs grease and paper. A jetter cleans scale far better than a cable, which is why a yearly or two year cleaning plan is common for homes with repeat backups.
Only a camera shows which of those materials your own lateral is made of. If your line is a newer plastic pipe, buildup is usually grease or a bellied low spot, and a camera will show which.
What moves the price of a jetting job
Jetting costs more than a basic cable run because the equipment is larger and the work takes longer. The price depends on your line, not on a standard menu.
- Line length and size. A long run to the street takes more passes than a short one.
- Access point. A clear indoor cleanout is quicker than digging or pulling a toilet.
- Condition of the pipe. Heavy scale or roots mean more passes or a cutter first.
- Camera work. A before and after inspection adds time but shows what was fixed.
- Time of day. Nights, weekends and holidays are emergency calls and are priced that way.
Insurance for a sewer backup depends on your policy, so read it or ask your agent before assuming a backup is covered.

Nearby towns, same question
Homeowners across the border ask the same thing. An older house in Moorestown and a newer build in Evesham can both need a camera look first, because the pipe material decides the plan. We serve Mount Laurel and nearby towns, and the first question is always what the camera shows.
For repeat grease clogs that need scheduled upkeep, ask about professional hydro jetting as a maintenance step.
Jetting questions from Mount Laurel homeowners
On sound pipe with the right nozzle and pressure it is safe and widely used. On a cracked or collapsed line it can make things worse, which is why a camera look comes first. If the camera finds damage, the plumber will explain repair options instead of jetting.
It depends on what is building up. Homes with a history of grease or scale often do well on a regular schedule, while a line that was only blocked once may not need it again. Ask the plumber after the camera run.
For buildup on the pipe wall, yes. For a single hard clog or a root mass, a cable with a cutter may be the better first move. See our notes on drain cleaning for how the two compare.
No. If the township main is the problem, your private line is not the cause. Report the backup to the Mount Laurel Municipal Utilities Authority and call us to confirm your line is clear.
Not automatically. A force main leak on Hartford Road in 2016 showed that a backup can come from the municipal side. Have a camera confirm your lateral first, then decide whether jetting is needed.
